Gradient Dye Wig Tutorial by Hakuji Gradient Dye Wig Tutorial by Hakuji
I suck at making tutorials. However, I've found out I've needed to gradient dye TWO wigs in the past couple months. I have a lot of people asking me how I did it, so here we go! If you have any questions, feel free to ask me here or at

What if the gradient is to be done on the top? Like white hair and black top 'roots'?

Is there a way to prevent the dye from coming off on Cosplay?

Hey I was wondering if it's okay if I -with credit and everything linking back to your page- post a link to this on a page Im running about cosplays and do-it-yourself tutorials? Only if it's okay with you of course!

Thank you for posting this tutorial! I've been coveting gradient wigs for a while and finding a way to make one myself is a huge help (and probably a lot of money saved depending on the wig vendors)! Do you know if RIT dyes work for pigment? I've seen many wig-dying tutorials recommend using RIT for regular wig dying (and it's the brand I use for dying most things so I already have some on hand), but I've never seen a gradient tutorial until now.

I hope getting the dye in your eyes wasn't too painful or damaging! That doesn't sound very pleasant. Maybe you should pick up some goggles from a craft or hardware store! They're often pretty cheap and definitely worth it if you plan on doing any more gradient wigs. It could be helpful for prop work, too. Just a thought! C:

I've used RIT dye on wigs before, but I personally prefer using India ink for pigment. RIT would work much the same, though, so it would work with this tutorial. :3 I'm glad I could help you with your wig work!

Ah, thank you so much! I can't wait to try this out. I didn't expect you to respond so quickly! I really appreciate it.

Really great tutorial you have here!

I was wondering, would this work if the dye were darker colours (black and red) instead of pastel/light shades?

My friend actually used this tutorial to dye black over a red wig. He just had to do it many many times. So yes, it's possible, just requires a little more patience.
